A Very British Sandwich for British Sandwich Week 2009

The British Sandwich Association has announced that it is to help the British farming and food industry beat the recession with the launch of a truly great British sandwich - the Great British Hammie - for British Sandwich Week (BSW) 2009 (May 10-16).

The Great British Hammie Pack The new sandwich range features three ham sandwiches made with British Standard Quality ham, Granary® bread and a selection of ingredients sourced from British suppliers.

Commercial sandwich makers across the UK are being encouraged to make the Hammie during April and May and the Association hopes that it will become the No1 sandwich for the period.

Furthermore, the Association hopes that all those making sandwiches at home will take up its ‘Support the British Hammie' campaign by making the same recipes for their lunch boxes and picnics.

"We wanted to do our bit for the economy and what better way than by creating a great sandwich that is affordable for the consumer and which directly supports the British food industry, from farm gate to sandwich shop," says Jim Winship, Director of the British Sandwich Association.

"One good way to help our economy and help our industry is to Buy British. It's only appropriate that we should lead the way in this as the sandwich is not only Britain's No 1 favourite food but it was invented in here," he adds.

The British Hammie will be going on sale in sandwich bars and retail outlets across the UK from mid-April and the Association is urging consumers to get behind it.

British Sandwich Week 2009 Logo The BSW Hammie range comprises three different ham sandwiches which have been designed to either stand alone or be sold together in a triple-pack. Wherever possible the industry will be using British ingredients and it hopes that the public will support its efforts by making the Hammie the top seller for May.

"The BSW Hammie range is intended to be flexible," says Jim Winship. "People can use one of the recipes to make a single Hammie, a combination of two or the full set - whatever takes your fancy."

The three sandwiches that make up the BSW Hammie range are:

British Standard Quality Gammon ham with cream cheese, chives and cucumber on white bread (a very traditional afternoon tea at the Ritz sort of sandwich)
British Standard Quality Gammon with English mustard mayonnaise and lettuce on Granary® (malted) bread
British Standard Quality Gammon ham with free range egg and watercress on Granary® (malted) bread (very traditional)

The campaign is being supported by Rank Hovis and Kitchen Devils as well as suppliers of key ingredients and packaging.
